The number of companies interested in deploying Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 is on the increase. If the number of recent emails and telephone calls I have received is any indication, then I expect this trend to continue. In step with the implementation of Windows 7 and Server 2008 is the move to 64 bit processing.
If you are planning this move be sure to test your existing applications to make sure they support the new operating systems. In particular be sure to determine the existing applications ability to run on a 64 bit operating system.
While many existing applications may not be 64 bit applications they may be 64 bit compatible by using WOW64. In short, WOW64 is a 32 bit or x86 emulator that allows 32 bit applications to run on a 64 bit operating system.
Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0 FP1 is the first verison to support WOW64 which allows it to run on supported 64 bit operating systems. In addition, Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0 FP1 supports Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2 and SQL 2008.
Once SQL 2008 R2 is released we will post an update to let you know the support status.
UPDATE 1: The current version of the SL 7.0 FP1/SP3/SP4 system requirements guide lists SQL Server 2008 R2 as supported.
UPDATE 2: SL 2011 has been released. Click here to see an updated guide to supported SQL and Operating System versions by Dynamics SL version.

Bottom line is that if you plan to deploy Windows 7 and/or Windows Server 2008 R2 then you need to be on Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0 FP1 or above. At the time of this blog there is no above.
